Patrol

Burleson County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is the frontline operational arm of the Burleson County Sheriff's Office (BCSO), responsible for maintaining public safety across the county's unincorporated areas and supporting law enforcement in smaller incorporated communities such as Caldwell, Chriesman, Deanville, Dime Box, Lyons, and Snook. Established as part of the BCSO's core functions since the office's founding in 1846, the division emphasizes proactive policing, rapid response, and community-oriented strategies to prevent crime and build trust with residents.
Key Responsibilities
Patrolling and Crime Prevention: Deputies conduct regular patrols in rural and unincorporated regions to deter criminal activity, monitor high-risk areas, and promote traffic safety. This includes enforcing state and local laws related to traffic, narcotics, and public order.
Emergency and Non-Emergency Response: The division provides 24/7 coverage for calls for service, including accidents, disturbances, welfare checks, and criminal investigations. Deputies are the first responders for incidents requiring immediate law enforcement intervention, coordinating with other agencies as needed.
Investigations and Enforcement: Initial handling of criminal complaints, traffic stops, and accident scenes, with follow-up investigations as required. This extends to serving arrest warrants and supporting special operations like tactical responses.
Community Engagement: Aligned with BCSO's commitment to community policing, patrol deputies partner with local leaders, businesses, and residents to identify crime trends, conduct outreach programs, and address neighborhood concerns. This fosters collaborative problem-solving rather than reactive enforcement.
Structure and Operations
Staffing and Leadership: The division is led by Lieutenant Chad Elkins and includes certified deputies trained in patrol tactics, crisis intervention, and de-escalation. Deputies undergo ongoing training through BCSO's calendar, covering topics like active shooter response and cultural sensitivity.
Equipment and Resources: Patrol vehicles are equipped with standard law enforcement tools, including firearms, radios, body cameras, and mobile data terminals for real-time access to records. The division integrates with BCSO's broader resources, such as the Emergency Management Division for coordinated disaster response.
Coverage Area: Spanning approximately 677 square miles of mostly rural terrain, the division prioritizes efficient response times, often leveraging technology like GPS dispatching to serve remote locations effectively.
Integration with Other Divisions: Works closely with the School Resource Deputy Program for campus safety, the Jail Division for detainee transport, and specialized units for narcotics or investigations. During emergencies, it coordinates with mutual aid from neighboring counties.
