Burleson County School Resource Deputy Program

Each Schools' School Resource Office is a component of the Burleson County Sheriff's Office initiatives aimed at enhancing school safety and community engagement in Burleson County, Texas. The program aligns with standard School Resource Officer (SRO) models used across Texas, emphasizing law enforcement presence, education, and counseling in schools. It involves assigning trained deputy sheriffs to local independent school districts, Caldwell, Snook, and Somerville ISDs to foster secure learning environments and build positive relationships with students.

Key Goals and Objectives

School Safety and Security: Deputies provide a uniformed law enforcement presence to deter crime, respond to incidents, and ensure a safe atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors. This includes immediate availability for emergencies and proactive threat prevention.
Educational and Community Support: The program promotes student pride in their schools, assists administrators in creating conducive learning environments, and delivers professional police services in an informative, non-interfering way. School disciplinary matters are handled by educators, preserving the separation between school rules and criminal law.
Counseling and Mentorship: Deputies act as informal counselors, helping resolve student issues, offering guidance, and serving as role models to encourage positive behavior and community involvement.
Activities and Examples

Classroom Presentations and Outreach: Deputies conduct talks on topics like community service, safety awareness, and personal responsibility.
Relationship Building: Deputies work closely with school personnel, parents, and students to address problems collaboratively, including cyberbullying prevention, drug education, and crisis intervention.
Training and Response: Participants receive specialized training in areas like active shooter response, youth counseling, and legal standards for school environments.
Program Structure

Assignment: Deputies are full-time or dedicated assignments to specific schools, allowing them to become familiar with the campus culture. The program is cooperative, involving BCSO, school districts, and community stakeholders.
Notable Participants:

  • Former Chief Deputy (now Sheriff) Bill Rios: Joined BCSO in 2023 initially as a school resource deputy after retiring from the Houston Police Department, motivated by a desire to protect children. Sheriff Rios has stated many times, "We will use any means necessary to protect our babies, they are our most precious resource."

Scope: Covers schools in Burleson County, including rural districts like Snook ISD. The BCSO emphasizes the program's role in emergency management and victim support, integrating it with broader public safety efforts
